Why the solstice — not January 1 — is your true New Year, and how to set a clear direction for the first half of 2026
This week delivers both the Sagittarius new moon and the winter solstice. The sun and moon meet in Sagittarius for the new moon and then together step into Capricorn, ushering in the solstice.
When the Sun enters Capricorn, winter officially begins. The longest night heralds the slow return of the light — one minute at a time. The sun reaches the Tropic of Capricorn, shifts direction and begins its journey north — back to the equator for the March equinox and onward to the Tropic of Cancer for the summer solstice.
At the solstices, the sun stands still. That’s literally what “solstice” means — sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). The sun pauses at its farthest southern edge along the horizon, suspended like a pendulum, before slowly reversing direction.
