Pisces new moon compassion meets the balancing point of the Aries equinox
Love or war. What’s your choice? And I don’t mean the new-agey “it’s all about love” trip. Do you choose to love yourself or to wage war within? Is your internal scale out of balance between self-trust and self-abuse?
This week’s Pisces new moon and Aries equinox invite you to explore that dynamic. I wonder how the world would feel if we all set new moon intentions guided by the Piscean themes of compassion, empathy, and unity. Just a guess… but probably a skosh better.
Following the watery Pisces new moon on Wednesday night, the sun springs forward into fiery Aries for the vernal equinox, on Friday morning. Slushy skiing, muddy trails, snowmelt rivulets, and unexpected sunburns abound. Feel the solar angle changing.
Nearly all the planets in our solar system are in Pisces or Aries right now: Mercury, Mars, the sun, the moon, Neptune, Saturn, Venus, and even the minor planet Chiron. The lone holdouts are Jupiter in Cancer, Uranus in Taurus, and Pluto in Aquarius. It’s a massive Pisces-moving-into-Aries lineup.
Have you seen Jupiter and Venus in the evening sky yet? I highly recommend taking a look shortly after sunset. They’re quite a sight to behold. The waxing crescent moon will be close to Venus on Friday night. Jupiter is hanging out in what the Lakota people call the “sacred hoop of stars.” Many indigenous people claim we incarnate through this area of the sky.
Pisces is a “feel the feels” water sign.
Pisces helps us feel compassion and heal. The energy of Pisces teaches us how to connect and come together in human solidarity. Pisces’ superpower is melding into the heart of the universe, snuggling us in unconditional love. This deeply feeling sign senses our sorrow and holds us while we cry. Pisces unity progresses into Aries individuation. Astrologers claim Pisces is the final sign of the zodiac and Aries the first, but does a circle have a beginning and an ending? Each astrology sign naturally evolves from the last, continuously and never-ending, like the alchemical serpent eating its tail.
Pisces grows into Aries. The energy morphs from oneness into the one. Aries is interested in its individual strength and is learning to wield its personal power, defying Pisces’ unification. Pisces merges with us and Aries defines our boundaries. Aries builds its brawn so it can serve and protect. Wonder Woman is the ultimate Aries poster child. She trains on Paradise Island with her Amazon sisters, forging her toughness, far away from the prying eyes of the patriarchy. She’s on a mission to save us from the bad guys. Come on, Wonder Woman and Aries warrioresses — we need you now!
Equinox means “equal night” in Latin. It’s a time of balance, the tipping point between day and night, dormancy and blooming, champagne powder and corn.
On the equinox, the sun rises and sets due east and west, the midpoint between the solstices, halfway between its lowest and highest traverse of the sky.
The equinox is the very embodiment of equilibrium.
On the heels of this Pisces new moon, the equinox is a fine time to check in with your lifestyle, noticing where you could benefit from a little more evenness. Especially as we jump into spring and grow antsy for longer days and heightened action. Are there areas of your life that feel out of balance? Work and play? Eating and drinking habits? Trusting and pushing? Utilize the sacred equinox energy to create more steadiness wherever you feel out of alignment. The sunlight illuminating the changing seasons is available to support you right now.
I used to live all my days out of balance. I spent decades swinging between shaming myself into doing more, more, more. I was always trying to overcompensate for my depression when I would shut down and barely function. My pendulum vacillated wildly between these two extremes. I would muster the strength to get out of my bed and then overdo it, seeking to make up for time lost, just vegging out. Unsustainable, I would eventually crash and burn. Overwhelmed, I’d collapse back into my bed again, racking up debt, working scarcely enough to cover rent and food.
Pisces taught me to have compassion for myself and my patterns of survival. The equinox showed me the importance of balance. Once I understood that I was good enough exactly as I am, Aries freed me to choose rather than react. I began to consciously cultivate stability, one slightly lower pendulum swing at a time. Hey, if I can do it, I have all the Pisces faith in the world, you can too.
