Venus is elegantly rising into the evening sky once again. Look for her to make a soft appearance in the western dusk sky, after the sunset, any day now.
She is slowly moving far enough away from the sun to be seen in the twilight sky. With our mountainous skyline, it could take a moment until we see her, but now’s the time to start looking. She’ll be faint when she first graces us with her presence, burning brighter in the months to come.
Entering her evening star chapter, Venus will spend eight months wowing us at nightfall, rising higher over time into the western sky. She is coming out of what ancient people called the “underworld.” Last April, Venus was seemingly swallowed up by the horizon, suddenly no longer visible in the morning sky. Now she is rising out of that subterranean place, apparently emerging from beneath the earth.
Our ancestors, no matter where our DNA hails from, watched the sky — every single night. Sans TV and screens galore, the cosmos was their nightly entertainment. Imagine watching the sunset daily and then suddenly spotting Venus arise, after her several-month hiatus hidden behind the sun. It would be a cause for celebration for the whole community. Unity would be felt in their shared experience and appreciation.
Gather your friends and family and look for Venus, just like our forebearers did. Being the third-brightest entity in our sky (after the sun and moon) our predecessors revered her. In fact, the first written myth (on those old clay tablets from the Middle East) is about Venus. “The Descent of Inanna” is a cosmological telling of the Venus cycle. How cool is that? Our first written story is about our divine feminine planet — Venus!
Venus entering this evening sky phase brings a grounding to our feminine expressions. According to the Sumerian story, the goddess Inanna (aka Venus) has gone through an alchemical death and rebirth in the underworld and now carries an innate wisdom and experiential knowledge. She has survived a challenging experience and has been transformed. Now as we re-emerge from the underworld, with Venus, we are ready to reclaim our light, shining into our own evening skies.
