Today is the Cancer full moon!! Happy full moon to you! Like Kool & The Gang says, “Celebrate good times, come on. Let’s celebrate.” It’s the full moon!
We start this week of Jan 13 off with the Cancer full moon today, so that’s exciting! Be sure to look for the moon tonight if you can, opposite the sunset. Look for Venus with Saturn in the western sky too. They’ll be getting closer and closer this week as they come together exactly on Saturday. Lots is happening in the evening sky right now.
How do you experience full moons? What do they feel like in your body and mind?
Full moons are a time when we can get a little crazy. The night sky is bright. We naturally stay up later, stimulated by the light. I wonder if this is where the modern focus on releasing at the full moon comes from. We let go, are less inhibited, get a little wild.
I love the full moon to get us a bit out of our boxes. I’m going to suggest a full moon, out of the box practice… let’s celebrate ourselves today, for this full moon.
Think about your ancestors on the full moon. They would no doubt come together, build a fire, have some food and drink, and celebrate the beauty of the setting sun and rising full moon —together, in community. It would be a time to cut loose and have some fun.
All this pressure around what you are releasing at the full moon has never set right with me. It feels like more work, not a celebratory party, like Kool & The Gang encourage us to do, “There’s a party going on right here. A celebration to last throughout the years. So, bring your good time and your laughter too. We gon’ celebrate your party with you, come on now!”
More self-improvement work doesn’t sound like a party to me at all, just more, constant, never-ending striving to fix how we’re broken. I say enough. There’s a time and a place and I think the full moon is a time to celebrate, let yourself go a bit. You can work on releasing what is no longer serving you tomorrow, as the moon starts waning, losing light, while you’re nursing your full moon hangover.
Instead, tonight, let’s celebrate you at this Cancer full moon. Cancer teaches us about unconditional love and nurturing. Loving ourselves means acknowledging and ultimately embracing our positive qualities, accurately seeing our full selves—not just judging our flaws constantly.
What is one thing that you can acknowledge yourself for today, on this Cancer full moon? If this whole idea triggers you, try choosing something small, teeny tiny, practically insignificant if you must.
The whole idea is to celebrate at the full moon and let go of the tight judgmental boxes we hold ourselves within—especially as women constantly under pressure to be better, do more.
Look for the full moon to be near Mars tonight. For some of us, the United States included, the moon will occult, pass in front of, Mars tonight. The occultation starts around 6:45 PM MST and lasts until 7:50 PM. Check your time zone and see if it’s still night during this timing. If so, you’ll likely see it or at least see it very close if not fully occulted! The moon and Mars are exactly conjunct at 3:48 AM in the UK, Jan 14, so you Europeans will have to get up in the wee hours of the morning to see it.
If the sky is clear tonight, I’ll be checking this occultation out. It’s so cool to watch the moon approach a planet, then seemingly gobble it up, only to pop out on the other side a little while later. Some of you may have been fortunate enough to see the moon occult Saturn a little over a week ago.
Today tune into the full moon and connect with it, visually or energetically. What it’s activating for you? Notice how you feel today—just simply that is enough! Tune into what you experience with astrology rather than what others tell you.
On Tuesday, the moon enters Leo, after passing by Mars. Leo is always imploring us to love ourselves more. Following on the heels of Cancer teaching us about unconditional love and celebrating something about ourselves—awkward as that can feel for many of us. Here we have multiple days inviting us to take one small step towards ourselves—with love. That’s beautiful.
Thursday is a big day for the divine masculine. We begin a new Mars cycle! Some astrologers look at the Mars/sun conjunction as the start of the cycle, but I learned in the Shamanic Astrology Mystery School, that the cycle begins when Mars is its most visibly brightest, at its opposition to the sun. Like our ancestors, looking to what is visible as the start of a cycle. It’s like seeing the first crescent moon as the actual new moon, not the dark of the moon time. So, Thursday, we’re kicking off a new Mars cycle in Cancer, while Mars is at its brightest. I spoke a bunch about Mars in Cancer last week, but I’ll add today let’s all lean heavily into opening our masculine sides to unconditional love, nurturing, and protection of our young and each other. Let’s embrace the Cancer side of the masculine and help empower it as we traverse this two-year Mars cycle.
Also on Thursday, the moon enters Virgo, moving into the priestess archetypal energy sign. Let your inner priestess shine! Let her out into the world. We need her as we consciously rejoin with our ancestral ways, deeply connected to the earth and sky, embracing our unity with the cosmos, and abandoning our modern separation from it.
Be sure to watch Venus getting closer to Saturn each night before they have their exact conjunction on Saturday. The moon will enter relationship-focused Libra on Saturday too. How does that feel to you? Where do your relationships with others teach you the lessons you need to know to truly see yourself?
Finally, on Sunday the sun moves into Aquarius, and we enter Aquarius season. There’s a lot happening this week! Aquarius will bring us to the midpoint of the winter in the north and summer in the south. Aquarius offers us space to step back and see the bigger picture. That can help with the Libra moon and exploring how our relationships serve or don’t serve us.
